Arthur Sommerville Buchanan was born on the 16th of August 1862 in Sydney, New South Wales to Peter Buchanan and Sarah Jane Harrison.
He married Alberta Victoria Meyer on the 16th of December 1885 in Hill End. They had 3 children; Agnes Ernistine Buchanan, Louise Alice Buchanan, and August Lyle Buchanan.
Arthur's first teaching appointment was at Adelong Public School.
Arthur was the principal at Adamstown Public School from May 1896 to June 1899.
From June 1911 to June 1921 Arthur was the principal of Kegworth Public School on the corner of Kegworth and Tebbutt Streets, Leichhardt. The school was opened in 1887 at a cost of 2528 pounds. A new brick infants school was erected in 1895 and further extensions and remodellings took place between 1908 and 1916.
As principal of Kegworth, Arthur was very keen on the new technology of magic lanterns. He had 6 months leave prior to coming to Kegworth, spending the time in Europe where he acquired extremely interesting photographs. He persuaded the Department to pay for material to darken the windows for his “lantern lectures” in geography and history.
Arthur was also the Headmaster of Singleton, Arncliffe, and William St schools.
In 1916, 1920 he was living at 31 Woodbury St, Marrickville.

In 1930, Arthur and Alberta were living at 215 Blaxland Rd, Eastwood. He was 68 and still a school headmaster.
Arthur died on the 12th of November 1939 at St. Luke's Hospital, Darlinghurst aged 77 years.
