Robert Shaw was born in October 1886 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland to Robert Shaw and Rose Ann Wisnom.
He arrived in Australia with his Father and Mother and siblings Rose and Rebecca sometime between 1887 and 1891.
The family settled in Hamilton, Newcastle in New South Wales.
Robert's father was a travelling jeweller who would frequently leave the family. He had a few run ins with the police.
When Robert was 10 he had his own police record when he was arrested for living on the street and running with a bad crowd.

He was arrested on the street and sent on the educational ship Sobraon. This ship was called an Industrial School and was a way to reform troubled youths.
He moved to Nowra on the south coast of New South Wales.
He married Emma Marie Booth on the 29th of January 1910 at the Methodist Church in Nowra. They had 8 children.
In 1921 Robert and Emma's son Jimmy (Thomas James Shaw) passed away aged 9 years.

The year after losing his young daughter to illness, Robert's wife Emma died aged 42 years.
