Charles Chetwynd Langley Talbot was born in January 1856 at sea on transit to New Zealand to Alexander William Going Talbot and Mary Agnes Wollaston. His middle name of Langley comes from his paternal grandmother Jane Langley.
He was known as Langley.
Langley, along with his father, mother, and elder half sister Jane only stayed in New Zealand for a couple of months. They left Auckland on the 7th of June 1856 aboard the brig "Moa". Langley is listed as 5 months old, hence the estimated birth of January 1856 (there is no birth certificate for him). They arrived in Sydney 3 weeks later.
The family eventually found themselves on the South Coast of NSW. Settling in the Shoalhaven region. Langley's younger brother Ramsden was born in Ulladulla on the 10th of May 1858.
In 1862, the family moved to Kilcoy in Queensland. Langley's father became the manager of Kilcoy Cattle Station in 1864 and the family lived at the station.
