Elisabeth Fowke (pronounced folk) was born on the 29th of July 1809 in Hampton, England to Francis Fowke and Mary Lowe. She was the youngest of 15 children along with her twin sister Eliza.
She married Thomas Bell on the 21st of December 1830 in Lydd, Kent, England. They had 8 children; Julia Bell, Alexander Charlton Bell, Frances Mary Bell, George Nugent Bell, Francis Bell, Frederick Thomas Bell, Ellen Elizabeth Bell, and Edmund Bell.
Her husband Thomas was a Royal Navy surgeon who had accompanied convict ships to Australia. He decided to settle in Australia, arriving in December 1838, and setting up in Braidwood. Elisabeth, along with her children Julia, Alexander, and Frances, joined Thomas in 1840.
Her brother Charles Fowke also emigrated to Australia. He was on the ship “Swiftsure” from Liverpool, arriving on the 29th of December 1865, then settling near Braidwood with some of his children. His wife Anne had died in 1853 back in Wales. The rest of Elisabeth’s siblings and her parents remained in the UK their whole lives.
Elisabeth died on the 19th of March 1882 in Braidwood aged 72 years. She is buried in Braidwood cemetery alongside her husband Thomas and their sons Frederick Thomas Bell, Edmund Bell, and Francis Bell.
