George Arthur Mowlam was born on the 19th of June 1868 in St Giles, Cambridge, England to George Mowlam and Hannah Crouch. His parents had both been born in Cambridge too. George was a bricklayer and Hannah was a laundry woman.

He married Mary Jane Mason in 1891 at Portsea Island. Mary died at 28 years of age in 1901 in Portsmouth.

He married Louisa Kate Lewis in late 1901 in Portsmouth. They had 5 children; Louisa Ellen Gladys Mowlam, born in 1904, Elsie May Mowlam, born in 1906, George William Frederick Mowlam, born in 1908, Kathleen N Mowlam, born in 1910, as well as a child that died in infancy. All 5 children were born in Portsmouth. They lost another child to infant mortality when their youngest child Kathleen died in 1911 at 1 year old.
At 45 years old, George, Louisa, and their 3 children Louisa (known as Dolly), Elsie, and George left Portsmouth on the 4th of December 1913 bound for Australia on the immigrant ship “Marathon”.
They arrived in Melbourne on the 15th of January 1914.

George died on the 13th of June 1923 in Ryde, Sydney aged 54 years.
