Karl Friedrich Keil was born on the 17th of May 1942 in Waldegg, Austria to Ernst Keil and Maria Muller. Waldegg is a small town of about 2,000 people in the state of Lower Austria.
From the age of 14 to 18 he attended Trade School at Rottenmann learning the trade of a fitter and turner. This trade would keep him in steady employment for the next 4 decades as he moved around the world. After completing his trade he worked for a few years in Vienna before deciding to emigrate to Australia. |
Karl emigrated to Australia in June 1964. He first lived at the Migrant Hostel in Daunt Avenue, Matraville. While drinking around the corner at the Matraville Hotel he met a woman named Joan. She soon became his partner and English Teacher as Karl spoke no English at the time.
Shortly after arriving he began working in his trade as a fitter and turner and began travelling with Joan around Australia and finding work. In 1965 he spent a year working at the Kalamia Sugar Mill in Ayr, Queensland. In 1967 he worked for a year in Darwin. And in 1968 he worked for a year at the Savage River Mines in Tasmania. All of Karl’s employers spoke highly of his ability and reliability.

He married Joan Doris Davis on the 1st of September at the Registrar General's Office in Sydney in front of Joan's sister Gloria and her step father Bill.
In his 6 years in Australia so far he had seen many different places however he had plenty more travelling in his future; this time back overseas. In May 1971 Joan and Karl travelled to Canada to work and live. He worked in Canada for a few years in the early 1970s as a machinist and lathe operator before he and Joan travelled to South Africa in 1973 where he worked his trade in Johannesburg.

After all of that travelling Joan and Karl finally settled in Erskineville in 1976; moving in to 86 Charles St. Back in Australia Joan and Karl spent time with Joan’s sister Gloria and her children Laura, Marc, and Jason.
After retiring from being a machinist Karl worked as a store person from 2004 to 2012 at Clipper International Corporation.
Apart from his work, Karl was a proud and active member of the Alexandria Erskineville Bowling Club; helping with setting up the bowls and knocking back the Reschs. With more than his fair share of places to choose from in the area to have a drink and socialise, Karl felt most at home among the friends he made at the Bowlo.
