British Army in India
Bill was said to be a Captain in the British Army in India (Her Majesty Queen Victoria's 104th Regiment). However, on his marriage certificate to Mary Agnes Strain (nee Wollaston) his occupation is listed as Boot and Shoe Maker.
Names used
- Alexander William Going Talbot was most likely named after his maternal grandmother Elizabeth Going's brother William Going. William was quite a prominent figure in the area. He developed the coal mines in Earlshill near Killenaule.
- Bill and Agne's first 4 children were named Adelaide, Constance, Denmark, and Gerald. The order of their births is unknown. They were all born in India and they all died of Cholera while in India. It is possible the 4 births included multiple births, as the time frame for their births is quite small. See the table at Agne's biography to see this. It is possible that some of the children were born before Bill and Agne's marriage in November 1853.
- Bill and Agne's 5th child Charles Chetwynd Langley Talbot was known as Langley. His second middle name of Langley came from Bill's mother Jane Langley. His first middle name of Chetwynd was a name used by the Talbots of Malahide. Is there an actual connection between Bill and the Malahide Talbots? Could his son be named after Charles Chetwynd-Talbot who was Lord Leuitenat of Ireland and had died only 7 years earlier? Could he be named after another family member? Or is it a connection Bill was trying to make by naming his son Charles Chetwynd Langley Talbot?
- Bill and Agne's 6th child Ramsden Gledstanes Talbot was named after Agnes' parents John Ramsden Wollaston and Mary Amelia Gledstanes.
His Parents
I have found online a grave for a William Talbot in Killenaule Cemetery http://historicgraves.com/killenaule-coi/ts-klnl-187/grave
It is erected by his wife Jane. To me this seems likely to be AWGT's parents. It has William Talbot dying in 1851, aged 75. That would make him born in 1776, which seems a plausible birth year for AWGT's father. As well as this, the grave is right next to a Langley family grave (possibly Jane's relatives) http://historicgraves.com/graveyard/killenaule-river-street-church-ireland/ts-klnl?page=7
