Harrie Weston Barnwell was born on the 8th of March 1897 in Five Dock, Sydney to William Barnwell and Elizabeth Emma Hilder.
In 1919, Harrie built his first home in Five Dock and at the same time founded his business, H.W. Barnwell.

He married Ada Bertha Meredith on the 23rd of October 1920 in Five Dock. They had 4 children; Bertha Joyce Barnwell, Jack Weston Barnwell, Harrie Keith Barnwell, and Ada Gwen Barnwell.
In 1922 H.W. Barnwell moved its operations to Sydney's Northern Districts, building two homes in Eastwood.
In 1929, as the great depression struck, Harrie moved the family to Young in country NSW, where he and his brother-in-law Frederick Richard Meredith bought and ran a bakery (trading as Meredith & Barnwell Bakers of Main St, Young).

During the 7 years in Young, a strong bond was established with the Pereira Family that was to become very significant later in Harrie’s life, when following Ada’s passing in 1947, he married Eva Pereira.
Tragedy struck when Harrie and Ada’s 18 year old son Jack was killed in an aircraft accident in Southern NSW on the 1st of August 1943. Jack was a trainee pilot for the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force).

In 1947 six local builders met and formed the Main Northern Division of the MBA (Master Builders Association) with Harrie being elected the foundation Chairman. H W Barnwell Pty Ltd continues to be one of the longest continuous members of the MBA.
After some time based in Eastwood the business moved to Cherrybrook for around 30 years. In 2013 the business relocated its office to the Northern Beaches but continues its main area of construction in Sydney's Northern suburbs.
In 1940 Harrie was joined in business by his son Keith. Keith’s sons Alan and Ken (the third generation of Barnwells) joined the company in the 1970s. Ken continues the company in his grandfather's name and is now designing and constructing new homes and additions in Sydney's Northern suburbs.

He married Eva Beatrice Pereira on the 3rd of April 1948.
Harrie died on the 6th of June 1983 in Eastwood aged 86 years.
